Chinese folk dance – Fan dance

Folk dance can also be called Han group dance. Han is the major group in China; they like to use the props in their dances. Fan is a typical prop; and fan dance is one of the most popular folk dances in China.

Chinese fans today are made of a variety of materials, including bamboo, silk, feathers, leaves and either painted or unpainted paper. Ornate fans are used decoratively or in fan dancing, and simpler, more durable fans may be used in everyday life. Many Chinese fan dances began as ceremonial rituals, and while the traditional dance movements haven’t changed. Classical fan dances include the traditional Han group dances that are performed on stages. Fan dances are currently a representation of beauty, grace, skill, tradition and history.

Many fan dances tell stories, whether performed by a single dancer or a group. In some cases, the dances were performed to help fuse China's diverse ethnic groups into a single kingdom. High fan dances often tell traditional stories, while folk-oriented fan dances may be performed simply for their visual beauty. The fan dance originates from the fan performances in ancient psychic conducts and folk-custom activities. The fan dance highlights delicate movements with constantly changing rhythm, which is dynamic and graceful. As well the exquisite Traditional Fan Dance mesmerized by spectators all over the world. In the workshop, we are going to practice some tricky fan skills, and learn some typical Classical Chinese Dance postures.

The aim of this workshop is to provide an opportunity for a broader audience to experience and understand the contemporary China through folk and ethnic dance. The duration of the workshop is roughly two hours. It will start with an overview and a brief description of dance in modern China with slides (approximately 10-20 minutes). And then, dancers will demonstrate the significant movement patterns. Trousers preferred in this dance, and if you have fan it will be brilliant; but if not, we will prepare some spare ones for you.
