Iraqi Style: Kawliat

Sahala_medium

Who

Shahla

Shahla has been studying Arabic dance for the last ten years. Although it began as a hobby whilst at university, it quickly became an obsession and led her to pursue it as a career. Shahla is now one of the most sought after performers on the London circuit. She has also worked in Lebanon at the world famous nightclub Nahr el Founoun. She travels regularly to Egypt for training under the instruction of the great teachers and dancers including Dina, Raqia Hassan, Aida Nour and Randa Kamel, to name but a few.

From the beginning of her career as a professional performer in London, Shahla has worked closely with many Iraqis, who encouraged her to learn the Iraqi gypsy style of dance. She spent many hours watching live performances by eminent Iraqi stars such as Melayeen and Ghalia, and at home, dissected video footage of these and other dancers. Shahla remains the only non-Iraqi professional perfomer of this dance in London (and probably the UK). She has worked extensively with many famous Iraqi musicians and singers, all of whom have commended her for her authentic and energetic style.

What

A rare chance to learn the style of the Kawliat gypsies from Baghdad. It is high energy and a lot of fun. Not suitable if you have knee or neck injuries. Note this is a high energy workshop.
