Who

Hilary Thacker

Hilary was originally trained in the Alexander Technique - a technique for body awareness - and had a practice working with professional musicians in London.

Hilary now has a successful dancing practice based in Edinburgh. She has been teaching and performing in the UK and the Middle East for the past fifteen years, specialising in the sagat and veil. She also plays Middle Eastern percussion and performed with the Egyptian band in the recent Farha Festival.

Last year her holiday courses went in a new direction with dancing, sagat and drumming on a Bedouin trip with camels in the Tunisian Sahara.

Hilary's Bazaar in Edinburgh has been open now for five years, the UK's first shop selling Middle Eastern dance costumes and musical instruments.

What

Get inspired by the different rhythms played in Egyptian music, and how to play them on a frame drum (douf/tef/tar.) By the end of the class we'll include some dance moves while we play!

Women have been frame drumming and dancing together for thousands of years in the Middle East. Bring you own frame drum or let us know when booking if you need to borrow one.

(There will be some frame drums for sale in the souk)
